Vilamoura
Vilamoura is the
area that is synonymous with the Algarve. It has grown in the last
thirty years to become a very popular tourist destination attracting
visitors from worldwide. The area boasts some of the finest golf courses
in Europe and many other sports including tennis, clay shooting, lawn
bowling and horse riding as well as a fine international marina with
a host of water sport and associated activities.
Both to the East and west there are glorious beaches and the Atlantic
Ocean provides some great sailing all year round and Vilamoura hosts
several international sailing regattas.
Close to the marina is situated the museum of Cerro da Vila which
shows a snapshot of the area in Roman times when it was an important
location, producing a fish paste known as "Garum"
To the west of the marina is an area called the "Parque Ambient"
a natural flat grassland that is abundant with birds and butterflies,
it represents about 12% of the total area of Vilamoura, this park
extends to the sand dunes and cliffs that protect Falesia Beach and
provide some great walking trails just a few minutes from the bustle
of the busy marina. The golden beaches stretch along the coast, sun
beds & umbrellas are available at a reasonable cost along with
cafe and wc facilities.
Vilamoura has
much to offer, both to those who visit and those who choose to make
it home but the marina is the hub of the resort and comes alive in
the evening, all around the perimeter are situated bars and restaurants
serving food of every description including traditional Portuguese,
English, Italian, Thai, Indian and Chinese.
The magic of Vilamoura
is undeniable and more than a few people who have stopped over for
a few days while sailing to The Mediterranean have returned to set
up home in this most charismatic town.
Neighboring Vilamoura
to the east is the once upon a time small fishing village of Quateira
that has since the 1960,s blossomed into a thriving resort that still
retains the charm of its market town origin with fish, fruit and vegetables
traded from stalls in street.
To the north is the commercial and administrative town of Loule and
for those who need retail therapy "Algarve Shopping", a
large retail shopping mall is situated about a 15 minute drive to
the west at Guia, a free bus service is also provided for would be
customers
